If we all know about the two major players that were No Limit and Cash Money for New Orleans in the 90’s and early 00's, down in the Nola, other labels and artists were making a lot of noise on the indie tip. And outside of the two powerhouses, the people's champ was Big Boy Records.
Big Boy never got the international recognition that the two others had, but it definitely should be remembered as one of the most influential and legendary indie label that NOLA's ever birthed.
In the early 90's, while CMR was just starting to emerge and No Limit was still in Cali, they simply had the best roster on the local scene with talented artitsts like Partners-N-Crime, Black Menace, Sporty T (R.I.P), Ghetto Twiinz or Fiend and Mystikal that No Limit would end up snatching away from the humble imprint.
It was a talent niche and actually the only real rival of Cash Money Records. The stuff with NL was mostly fabricated by the media, and the little of truth in it was from ex-Big Boy Records’ artists that landed on the Tank. So it was indeed more of a Big Boy/Cash Money beef than anything else. And they weren’t scared to diss Baby and his boys, with notably Sporty T going at Baby, Juvie and the rest of them a few times, with of course others from Big Boy also joining in at times this war of words that lasted for years.
That’s for the little beef stuff. Actually, more than just being an old CMR rival, Big Boy Records was one of NOLA's most important and influential labels in the 90’s, and can be seen as one of the cornerstones of the local rap scene, discovering some important acts and producing a lot of great records. The regretted G-Slimm’s first album, Four Duece and Tray’s, Partners-N-Crime, PNC and Pump the Party, Mystikal's first album and more that are now considered classics (you can find more in our selection below).
To be noted, the legendary label was "resurrected" a few years back and is still doing a lot down in NOLA with notably a new rapper called Young Gabe, but I’ll come back to that later.
For now, enjoy a first hour mix to (re)introduce you to one of New Orleans’ most iconic labels, Big Boy Records.
