After doing a first NOLA compilation, i thought it was only right to follow with one of the biggest label that New Orleans and the State of Louisiana ever birthed, Cash Money Records.
We all know who and what made it what it is today. But I wanted to take you back before the Hot Boys and before all the fame. When Cash Money was just a little local label. Before they had signed Juvenile and Turk, the missing pieces to form the Hot Boys (B.G and Wayne were down from early on).

Anyways, here we're going back to the very beginnings. Back when the biggest acts on the label were local stars like U.N.L.V, Kilo G, Lil Slim, Pimp Daddy, with Mannie Fresh already as in-house producer, and Ms Tee as their first lady. That was before being labeled as not having the potential for national stardom by Baby who would explain it in the media a few years later.
Maybe he was right, because after all Mr Ivan ended up being a poor’s man version of Mystikal, and none of them ever really blew up on a national scale afterall. Still they were the first employees, the ones who built the foundations, and some of those foundations were actually very solid.
Even more than that, the Magnolia/Eagle Street’s rapper, Lil Slim can be credited as the one who bought Lil Wayne to Baby and his brother, Slim.
Mannie Fresh would also admit years later that it was U.N.L.V's hit Drag’Em to the River that helped Juvenile's decision to sign with Cash Money.
Nowaday, U.N.L.V is still active, but Yella Boy (R.I.P) was shot to death in the early 90's, when they were signed to CMR. Pimp Daddy (R.I.P) was also shot to death around the same time, before the release of his second album, which became more of a tribute album, as it featured a few joints with Pimp himself but mostly joints from other members of the crew and allowed in the process to shade more light on youngsters like the B.G’z (Lil Wayne and B.G).
Let’s revisit a little bit of the early days of one of one of rap's most powerful labels and the biggest to ever come out of New Orleans with this selection of tracks from what we can call the pre-Hot Boys era.
