First thing you have to know about Texas, they’re very productive down there. With more than 9,000 albums released since the late 80’s, the history is long and rich. I won’t go over it all, but to show you the roots, I’ll do you a few playlists revolving around the work the Lone Star state's rap pioneers with an heavy focus on Houston, the city being one of the most important ones on the rap map, but I’ll come back to that argument in another post.
For starters, here is a compilation of pioneering artists from Texas with legends like UGK, 5th Ward Boyz, Lez Moné, E.S.G, who isn’t a Texas native but made his mark there, Trinity Garden Cartel, or Al-D and Devin's first group, Odd Squad, and more...
You’ll notice that if a few cats were into the east coast sound, a lot of music down there was heavily influenced by the west coast but they soon developed their own identity with a country laid back vibe but still funk orientated sound. Don't think, Texas is one dimensional, though, with Blac Monks, K-Rino or the hardcore of Ganksta N-I-P, you could find a little bit of everything down there.
