Rap-A-Lot 1st Decade Part 1

They’ll tell you No Limit and Cash Money started everything, but it's not true!
If you wanna attribute anything to anyone, you have to give the honors to Rap-A-Lot (RAL) and Suave House Records
I’ll talk about Suave later, because let’s be honest, the real originator of the down south rap entrepreneur thing is J Prince, founder of Rap-A-Lot Records.
J Prince is from and started in and for the Houston/Texas rap scene, but this pioneer quickly became responsible for the first powerhouse to emerge from the south.
Remember that everything actually started in 86 for his Rap-A-Lot imprint when he launched the first iteration of the Geto Boys and then a few others Texas acts.
Within a few years, RAL became an international hip-hop force to be reckon with for talents from all over the south and even beyond.
J Prince signed midwest acts like Do Or Die and DMG when nobody was really looking at the region. Signing also Seagram out in the Bay, CJ Mac and Poppa LQ out of the L.A area and even some east coast teams like The Source’s ex, Benzino and his group, The Almighty RSO, by 1996/97, he had one of the biggest most diversified roster of any rap label, Def Jam included.

From 87 to 97, in its first decade of existence, if the masses only remember the Geto Boys and a few other hits, Rap-A-Lot released mad classics and bred a lot of legendary acts like 5th Ward Boyz, DMGGanksta N-I-P, Do Or Die, and so many more.

Today, Cash Money or No Limit are the big names everyone remember, but  Rap-A-Lot will always be the true pioneering indie label of them all! It is the southern version of Def Jam and its legacy is as great as its east coast counterpart.

So, in this new series, I’ll try to cover some of RAL long and rich history going over their first 2 decades, and start, let’s go back to the very beginnings with this compilation of songs dating from 1988 to 1993 with some of the label’s first signees such as Royal Flush, Prince Johnny C, O.G Style, the very first and raw lady Choice, the youngest member, 2 Low, and a lot more that I'll let you discover right here.

P.S: I’m leaving out Geto Boys, as I’ll have do some special about them soon...
