We went over a few of the originators with the first Texas Pioneers compilation and will probably have another mix of the sort soon.
But behind Rap-A-Lot, Suave Records, nobody was really getting any love as the rap world was strictly dominated by the east and west back then. The generation that established itself in the late 80s/early 90st didn’t get much (inter)national recognition and Texas was striving to get heard.

To cut short, in Houston, and other cities around the state as well, people quickly understood that it was better not bother waiting on major labels if they wanted their music out.
They didn't, and from the mid 90’s, thousands of rappers and hundreds of independent rap labels started to emerge with their own slang, their codes, their own style of rap and movements to form one of the biggest indie rap scene with some real talented artists, but also some smart street entrepreneurs who knew how to hustle to get the music out and the dollars in.

Doing it their way, they made Houston one of the hottest places for indie rap in the southwest and way further.
Rappers on this compilation, whom for the most part are affiliated with the Screwed Up Cick, sold hundreds of thousands and some of them even millions of records without any major backing, any big machine behind them.
It never stopped them and their music from traveling far from the south to make them real indie and underground legends as it's the case for guys like Z-Ro, E.S.G, Lil Keke and of Course DJ Screw, amongst others on this one.
They've really influenced a lot of people with their sound, but also with their work hectic and hustle, showing generations to come how the indie grind should be done and how it is done down in Texas.
So here is the first one in a series of many honoring all the Texas independent bosses who really built empires and became legends in their own right and with dope music.

PS: Tow Down was never that big of an artist, but that track is just classic to me, and it features two monsters anyway. Just wanted to be clear!
