Since I started with a lot of southern stuff to balance a bit I wanted to go the opposite way, up north, in the midwest, to another great land of Hip-Hop, Illinois and more precisely Chicago.
Often the most overlooked and underrated region in rap America, the midwest and Illinois always have had a lot more to offer than just a few big names.
And the Chi being the music city it is and also the biggest city out there, it’s only right to start my foray into the middle over there.
Chicago is buzzing right now with the drill movement, Bibby, Keef and all those young cats, and also a few others who've been making noise for years like Kanye, Lupe Fiasco and a handful of others behind.
It was a time, tho, in the 90's, when Twista, Crucial Conflict, Common and Do Or Die, the latter having to relocate down-south to Texas to be able to find a record deal, were the only major Chicago's acts.
The city wasn't get much love on the rap map and it was hard to get a deal or radio spins for local rappers, and so, they did it their own way.

What's particularly fascinating when you take a look back at the 90s/00s' Chicago scene is how diverse the sound was.
It's true that you've got your fair share of rappers in the Twista/Do Or Die lane with super fast flows and dark, mellow beats, but as soon as you start digging a little, you notice that's it's a very rich scene in term of sounds.
From straight boom bap to more funky vibes via southern inspired rappers as well, you could find anything and some quality on top of it.

And you’ll hear with this compilation of 90’s Chi-Town jewels. In the public eye or not, the windy city had a lot going on, and birthed some pretty dope rappers who should be remembered like E.C Illa, J.D Walker, Just Ro, D 2 the S and many more who I'll try to honor with this new series of compilations dedicated to the Chicago sound.
